Riparian Initiative
What are riparian areas?
Riparian areas are ecosystems that occur along streams, rivers, and lake shores where vegetation is strongly influenced by the presence of water.
Why do we need to protect riparian areas?
Fort Worth is growing rapidly and losing 50 acres of open space a week to development. Building in riparian areas can reduce their benefits.
How can we protect our riparian areas?
Buffers are setbacks that restrict development within a certain distance of a stream or river and preserve riparian areas in their natural state.
Development incentives help mitigate the loss of buildable land to the property owner or developer and include a wide range of strategies depending on the type of development.
Recognizing the value of riparian areas will help encourage their preservation. Developments that preserve riparian green space, especially those that incorporate amenities like trails, are more desirable with higher property values.
Why are riparian areas important?
Riparian areas provide many benefits to people, wildlife, and property:
• Mitigate flooding, erosion, and sedimentation
• Filter stormwater runoff and pollutants
• Typically have significant tree canopy and reduce the urban heat island
• Serve as important habitat and wildlife corridors
• Support community mental and physical health through access to green spaces and recreation
• Provide natural amenities that enhance property values
• Promote economic opportunities through trail-oriented development
